Most mergers fail within the first year
No giant robot for you! Omnicom and Publicis have called off the marriage, presumably because Dentsu caused a scandal at the bachelor party.
On the subject of partnerships in crisis, I’ve only just realized I owe Jamie a huge and long overdue apology.
When we first met, I instantly knew two things about Jamie: he saved a lot of money skipping haircuts and he fucking loved the TV show Friends. Not enjoyed. Not appreciated. Loved.
He talked about fictional characters like they were real people. He delighted in their triumphs and worried about Ross and Rachel. He saw himself as Joey and me as Chandler, which was prescient because Matthew Perry and I weren’t even bloated yet.
Twinsies!
Long story short, I mocked him for it. Because it was just so funny to me that this guy who appeared to be a surly misanthrope was secretly a gushing fanboy. For a sitcom, no less!
And I’m so very, very sorry, Jamie. Because NBC just cancelled Community. And I have grieved less for relatives I’ve buried.
The ratings were beyond terrible, so most of you will have no idea what I’m talking about, but it was consistently the most brilliant, ambitious and funny show on television.
As a writer, episodes like “Cooperative Calligraphy” and “Remedial Chaos Theory” left me awestruck in admiration. Love action movies? “Modern Warfare” will blow your mind. Prefer Ken Burns documentaries, horror, spaghetti westerns, mob movies, or video games? Vulture’s Matt Zoller Seitz called Community “the most meta-textual live-action half-hour comedy in network TV history.”
sigh
I enjoy Game of Thrones when the producers aren’t going out of their way to shoehorn in extra rape scenes.
I appreciate Orphan Black, because Tatiana Maslany is giving the best performance on TV right now.
But I love Community. A lot.
